This course prepares a named individual to hold overall responsibility for safeguarding in an organisation that has care of children (a school, club, faith group, sports body, charity, camp, or care setting). On completion, the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) will be able to:
• Own and maintain the organisation's safeguarding policy and risk assessments
• Ensure every physical, digital and relational space children use has had risk designed out of it
• Ensure everyone with access to children has been safely recruited, checked (including appropriately screened), and supervised
• Ability to recognise indicators of possible abuse, neglect, and exploitation and act on concerns confidently
• Will receive a disclosure correctly, without contaminating evidence or increasing harm
• Trigger the correct internal and external response within required timeframes
• Keep records that protect the child and stand up to external scrutiny
• Support the wellbeing of the child, staff, and themselves through a case
The course consists of 11 modules, each containing:
- A video presentation by the facilitator.
- Downloading the notes of the topic.
- Making your own notes on the Case History
- Completing the quiz questions
At the end of the 11 modules, the participants will participate in a webinar where their notes on the Case Histories will be discussed.
Following this webinar is the online 33 question exam in order to receive your Certificate of Attendance.
One more qualification remains (as part of the entire DSL course) - the one-on-one skills assessment interview with each participant to determine the participant's ability to apply the theory learnt during the 11 modules. On successful completing the assessment, the participant will earn a License to Practice Certificate.
All trained DSLs will be given the opportunity to be part of a Discussion Forum where they will be able to share experiences and questions and where they will also be able to comment on others' discussion posts. This will ensure that the DSL's have a safe space where they can share experiences as well as where ongoing learning can take place.
